LCDPFI holds Mass Intake and Assessment of CWDs in Parañaque City

Leonard Cheshire Disability Philippines Foundation Inc. (LCDPFI) and Save the Children International (SCI) in coordination with the Barangay Operations Office through Mr. Cherwin Aguilar, OIC – Barangay Operations Office of the City of Parañaque, led a one day event entitled “Mass Intake and Assessment of Children with Disabilities” at Marcelo Green Village, Parañaque City on September 12, 2014.
The activity’s primary objectives are to register all children with disabilities (CWDs) within Paranaque and be evaluated by medical specialists. Moreover, the mass intake encouraged the parents of CWDs toavail and register of the PWD ID through their City Social Welfare Development Office – PWD desk. Thisis an initiative of KASALI project of LCDPFI and Save the Children to come up with a database of CWDs for the Local Government Units perusal.
Ms. Marie Fe Cimafranca, LCDPFI Project Officer of Inclusive Education, also discussed the definitionof disability, its evolving disability model and the importance of using person first language for theenlightenment of the parents and guardians of CWDs.

“Ang disability po ay hindi sakit, ito po ay panghabangbuhay na kondisyon. Hindi po to nakakahawa. Tawagin po natin ang mga batang ito sa kanilang pangalan at hindi po sa kanilang kapansanan”,(“Disability is not an illness but a lifetime condition. It is not a contagious disease. Let us call thesechildren on their names instead of their disability”), said Ms. Cimafranca.
Ms. Cimafranca further explained the advantages of having a PWD Identification card in order for themto avail the benefits covered by the card. At the end of the assessment, parents photocopied their form and proceed to the PWD registration area to get their own PWD ID.

To help assess the CWDs, six (6) specialists were present during the whole activity: Dr. Peter Francis Raguindin, a University Researcher – Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institutes of Health at the University of the Philippines Manila and Faculty at Section of Medical Physiology, San Beda College of Medicine and General Pediatrics, Topnotch Medical Board Prep; Dr. Ferdiliza Dandah S. Garcia, a registered Speech Pathologist and a senior lecturer and CAMP CBR Training Coordinator at University of the Philippines – Manila; Dr. Elaine Marie Reyes – Madamba, Head of
Learning Unit VII of the University of the Philippines – Philippine General Hospital, College of Medicine; Dr. Eivelyn Rose Pinacate, medical officer of Parañaque Community Hospital; Dr. Ma. Celina C. Butalon, Rehabilitation Medicine Consultant of Olivarez General Hospital in Parañaque, Healthway Medical Inc. in Greenbelt 5, Health Maintenance Inc. Makati and Healthway Medical Inc., ATC; and Dr. Mia H. Oxiles, General Physician at St. Magdalene Polyclinic in Cabuyao Laguna and the Company Physician of LWV Corporation in Mandaluyong City.
In behalf of the Marcelo Green Village barangay captain Christopher Aguilar, his mother, Mrs. Myrna Aguilar graced the program and thanked all the staff, volunteers and physicians who rendered their time for the said activity.

A total of thirty (30) CWDs from seven (7) barangays in Paranaque were assessed all throughout the activity.
