LCDPFI capacitates teachers for Inclusive Early Childhood Education

Leonard Cheshire Disability Philippines Foundation Inc. (LCDPFI) and Save the Children International (SCI) through its joint project Kabataang Aralin sa Lahat ay Ibahagi (KASALI) project, and the local government units and Department of Education of Pateros, Taguig and Parañaque conducted a two-day teacher’s training entitled “Accommodating Children with Disabilities in an Inclusive Early Childhood Education Setting” at Bayview Park Hotel Manila on September 29 -30, 2014.

The objectives of the activity are to train teachers in accommodating CWDs in regular pre-school classes, to increase the level of understanding of the teacher, to increase knowledge and awareness, and to capacitate teachers in handling CWDs in their regular classes. In addition, the training aims to answer concerns and expectations of the teachers through the different presentations.

To educate and raise awareness among the teachers, six (6) speakers from different fields were invited to share their expertise: Ms. Maria Chita Singayan – Retired Chief Education Specialist, SPED DepEd; Ms. Ma. Victoria Ramos – Vice President, ASP Laguna; Ms. Ma. Ana Del Valle – Director, Autism Resource Center; Ms. Nathalie Pigar – Preschool teacher at Resources for the Blind; Dr. Marie Grace Gomez – Professor at the University of the Philippines Diliman and Director of Learning Resource Center; and Atty. Jessica Siquijor-Magbanua – LCDPFI Board of Trustees. Topics discussed include introduction to inclusive education and classroom management, accommodation for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), accommodation for children with intellectual and learning disabilities and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), accommodation for children with visual impairment, accommodation for children with physical disabilities and hearing disabilities, and how to make an individual accommodation plan (IAP) and individual family service plan (IFSP).

Ms. Marie Fe Cimafranca, Project Officer – Inclusive Education (LCDPFI) also explained and discussed the role of the teachers and Day Care Workers in an inclusive classroom.

A group activity was conducted on the second day of the training to practice and apply the learning of the teachers. Teachers were grouped and each group was given a case study to make an IAP and IFSP.

LCDPFI founding chair Ms. Lourdes Reyes graced the second day of the training and gave an inspiring message to the participants during the closing program.

“If I have to choose between meeting President Benigno Aquino III and you, I will choose you, why? Kasi you are the reason merong President PNoy ngayon! Kayo ang humubog at gumawa na magkaroon ng mga Pnoy sa mundo!” (You are the reason why there is Pnoy today. You molded and created the PNoys in the world)




Ms. Reyes together with LCDPFI Board of Trustee Mr. Vicente Hao Chin Jr., Ms. Hazel Joy Borja – LCPDFI Programme Manager and Ms. Cimafranca gave the certificate of attendance and certificate of participation to each participant.

A total of seventy-four (74) teachers and Day Care Workers attended the seminar.
